I'm using a new internet cafe today! I went to lunch with the other girls who work at my orphanage and now I'm waiting in central kumasi with maggie for our weekly projects abroad meeting. We're splitting a half hour just to kill some time, so this is a quick update to say that I am going to be in Mole national park looking at wildlife fri-mon. I'm excited! It's super far north and it takes like 12 hours to get there, but I heard it's worth it. Plus, my favorite catch phrase...only in Ghana once! I shall blog about it next tuesday probably. Be excited.
Alice went to the hospital yesterday and they tried to get her to stay overnight! Oh dear. That would have been horrible. They gave her something labelled as blood strengthener, which she says just tastes like blood. I wouldn't be surprised if this was an informal bloof transfusion...
For now I hope you all are well! We're getting more innovative at the orphanage and we're hanging out more with the boys (because the other volunteers there help pass the time), even though we're only supposed to be with the girls...but no one really cares what we do, so it doesn't matter. Later!

Holla for a dolla!
ReplyDeleteJulia, make sure you wear protective clothing as there are loads of tsetse flies in Mole (they moved everyone out of the area as they transmit sleeping sickness). Make sure you swipe away any big flies that settle with their wings crossed! Just 1 more thing to think about. I'm praying for Alice - was stuff given orally? Don't want to contract AIDS from blood...
ReplyDeleteJULIAJULIAJULIA! I don't even know where to begin to respond to allllll the things you've already experienced and observed in Ghana! Well 1. I miss you. 2. I remember my teacher really enjoying that giant open air market, so if you check it out you should write about it! 3. I'm hoping that you are somehow like hybrid for sickle cell anemia. Mostly for the immunity against malaria, less for the anemia. Basically, stay safe, stay healthy, stay strong! ...apologies for the lame phrasing
ReplyDeleteMy Mom says you need to wear gloves. She also says that if you get AIDS, she is going to kill you. But we'll always t'aimons.
ReplyDeleteMum - I wore protective clothing but was still bitten by the flies. They were slightly painful, drew blood, and have left red marks on my legs. Alice is super sensitive and her legs swelled up and developed blisters! But check your info - the ones in Mole no longer carry diseases! :D ps your comments are a downer! :P
ReplyDeleteAmy - Haha the market is crazy! I see a new part each time and while it's really dirty and stressful it is cool. No luck on the recessive sickle cell...
Megan - Tell your mom the aids might kill me first. Oh and that she's going to have to reteach me the proper way to deal with children upon my return. Somehow the logistics of which side of the puzzle to put the removed pieces on is slipping out of the forefront...
